aug 25th, 2:27 am update:
hello everyone- grant has had a lot of visitors today..and ive been telling him that his group has reached over 300 people already (even though he would pretend he was unhappy that people are making a fuss..i know he really appreciates it deep down)..so thank you sooo much for all your comments and prayers..we are still waiting on that miracle and he is not getting any worse right now..so we can only keep hoping for better...
we have several families from the london area that are helping us out right now..we've had lots of food and places to stay..so thanks so much to all for their help..
i talked with the neuro surgeon earlier this afternoon and he had bluntly said that he didnt think that grant was going to make it.. he has large contusions to the right side of his brain, which he thinks at best will cause paralysis in the left side of grant's body..there is so much swelling that the ventricles have been squeezed shut, so they are not able to do any surgery to relieve any of the pressure...(the ventricles are the connections between the two halves of the brain...and attempting to put a shunt, a little tube, into them to drain the swelling is likely to cause more damage than good...) the brain does several things in order to relieve such pressure, the last of which is to sink into the brain stem, which will cause loss of all functioning..(the brain stem is responsible for the basics like breathing).. this has not yet happened..but this is the fear and if that happens, it's over.. he also has lost a large portion (or all, not sure) of his basal ganglia (which is responsible for perceptual capabilites, like knowing your arm is extending and that you are sitting in a room etc.) from what i understand, his vision is in concern, although i am not sure if that is because the left side of his face is fractured, and he has a large rocky like bruise all over his left eye..or because his visual cortex has been harmed.. additionally, there has been bruising on both halves of the prefrontal cortex which, last i heard, was spreading.. (that portion of the brain is responsible for inhibitory responses and decision making) lastly, they believe he's suffered from the equivalent of 'baby shake syndrome'..where the brain has detached from the skull due to the impact.. he also has a partially collapsed lung, a shattered (i beleive) shoulder and various other scratches and bruises..
a family friend of ours that is a doctor and has worked in trauma a great deal is on his way up tomorrow to confer with the mri images to make sure they are doing everything they can..tomorrow he will have an MRI and some Xrays to see if his neck is damaged..
we think he can hear us, at least on some level, because his heart rate goes up and he squeezes our hands whenever we sing to him...and we've been singing a lot..tomorrow we are going to get a cd player and keep it on all the time..
ive been told however, that swelling can affect the scans and give the wrong reading on portions of the brain..so we won't know the real truth for some time
i think its a lot to be said that he's made it nearly 36 hours now..and seems to be stable..and very clearly there was a reason that a doctor and a nurse showed up just in time to help him..
the youth camp that he was driving back from cancelled classes and has been praying and meditating all day, but they didn't cancel the choir and i'm sure that's what grant would have wanted..
i will update you with some more soon xxx
aug 24th, 6ish pm:
Grant got in a really awful accident on the way home from manitoulin last evening. He rear ended a truck near the sarnia border and has sustained closed head injuries. The doctors don't think that he is going to make it, so we need all the help that we can get to keep the prayers going so that we can have a miracle.
He is stable right now, but the bleeding is spreading and there is nothing they can do.
He is in the Victoria hospital on wellington in London, Ontario if anyone wants to send cards (for when he wakes up..because I know he will..he's a fighter..) the address is 800 Wellington, London ontario somthing something (lookup the zipcode), or you can send them to my home address 31225 Fromm Drive, Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
There is not really anywhere convenient to call right now (because I left my cell at home..) but I will update you when there is...
PLease keep singing (because that is what Grant would want) and praying and please invite anyone who knows him to this group so we can keep everyone updated.
Thanks to all,
Love,
Hannah and Ethan
(Grant's sister and brother)
